New PSOS Officers Take The Reins

The Prairie State Orchid Society elected and installed new officers at our April meeting. Returning officers are Greg Curtiss, president, at left, and George Kloppe, right, treasurer. New to the board are Angela O'Brien, secretary, and John Gross, vice-president.

PSOS membership exceeds 100 and Secretary O'Brien noted in her meeting announcement that dues for the 2009-2010 year are now overdue.

PSOS Honors An Outstanding Member And 'Local Treasure'

The Prairie State Orchid Society honored longtime member Dewey Houser with The Orchid Digest award March 20.

Described by PSOS President Mitzi Vasconcelles as "a local treasure", Dewey is one of the Society's most accomplished growers and also one of its hardest working volunteers. Not only is he involved with our annual show and sale, by serving as the main contact with growers in Chicago where we buy the plants for our sale, he also spends long hours preparing the plants for the sale once they are returned to Springfield.

Then during the event itself, Dewey works the show, offering advice to attendees who are beginning orchidists or sharing his expertise with those who have advanced into hybridizing and more technical levels of growing. For several years Dewey even chaired the show committee helping to establish it as a most successful PSOS educational outreach, but also its largest annual fundraiser.

At the annual Christmas party, Dewey plays Santa by ordering and (once again) preparing the holiday orchids given to Society members.

He serves as one half of the "Dewey and Tom" monthly "show and tell" program where members bring their plants to share and for a critique of their qualities.

Dewey is always willing to talk about orchids, give tips on their culture, answer questions about growing problems and help out at repotting clinics.

In the photo above with Dewey, center, are, from left, Treasurer George Kloppe, President Vasconcelles, Secretary Shirley Adams and Vice-President Gregg Curtiss.

The Orchid Digest, a publication dedicated to growing orchid species, offers clubs and societies the opportunity to recognize outstanding members selected by local groups themselves. This year several members were nominated with the executive committee selecting the recipient. Last year's award recipient was George Kloppe.
